Adobe Reader DC - Installation Instructions

Please Note: After you install windows software with Wine/PlayOnLinux, you cannot backup/restore that particular instance of the Appliance. DO NOT Worry, this will not interfere with daily use nor does it stop you from restoring other appliances.

Therefore every time you load the appliance you have to perform an extra step to install Adobe Reader DC.

Steps to install Adobe Reader DC

  1. Open PlayOnLinux, Click install and search for Adobe Reader DC
  2. Select the installation file in your Linux home directory and follow prompts
  3. After installation select the Application and click the Configure button
  4. Under components look for riched20 and install it

There is no substitute for Adobe Reader DC desktop version. This is the only tool that allows you properly fill out XFA PDF forms and see error messages if any. These forms are used by a lot of government agencies and other organizations.

Optional flags to enable if you want to install a virtual machine

Please Note: These settings just boost the power to your Linux Environment. I personally leave them on all the time.

  1. Type chrome://flags/ in your address bar
  2. Enable: Crostini GPU Support & Scheduler Configuration

You do not need to do any of this if you are only planning to use Wine/PlayOnLinux.

Also Note: Launch the Appliance Update app once you load the container. This will do an internal check to see if running a VM is advisable.

Virtual Machine Backup Process

After the VM is installed back up can be tricky. I do not recommend backing the entire Linux Container / Appliance since restoring might not work but you can give it a try.

Instead I would recommended to backup just the VM itself and zip it. Reload when needed in the future.

  1. Copy image from /var/lib/libvirt/images
  2. virsh dumpxml {{VMNAME}} > domxml.xml
  3. When restoring just Paste the Image back into /var/lib/libvirt/images
  4. Then run virsh define domxml.xml
